Pies, Playdough and Pumpkins

It has been a busy month for the kids around the Karstens house. We have been working them like there is no tomorrow.

Gram's tree had lotsa apples so we made some pies and apple crisps. If you need any help with the hand crank peeler call Will. He is a pro. Truly. And Em is quite the supervisor. Note her observation of the pile of peelings. Then there was the evening of playdough creations. Will took a lot of time to put the parts on the lumps of dough and even texturized each of the animals with the appropriate tool. Em played along but tried to eat more of it than seemed necessary.
That is a blue elephant and a yellow giraffe. In case you were curious.

We finally took some time to carve the pumpkin that Gram got us from the Harrington girls' pumpkin patch. (What was left of it after the slugs had lunch anyways.) Will chose the shapes of the features and tried to use the carving tools for everything but what they were meant for. He also spent lots of time putting the pieces back in the face like a puzzle after I got them carved out. Emmy wasn't so excited about touching anything pumpkin related but liked the thing when it was lit.(This is the same picture as the previous one but in the dark.)

Wishing you the spookiest of Halloweens ever!

Goodbye old shed, we're leaving you now

The day finally came to tear the shed down. Our beloved second family, the Torgersons, came to our assistance once again and helped with the destruction. It was one of the last 95 degree days of the summer/fall but we were in the shade most of the time so it didn't seem so sweltering to those of us not wielding sledge hammers or power saws. (Darrell would sweat like that even if it were only 60 out.)Darrell and Brad getting the remaining parts of the garage door out. Okay, Darrell working Brad supervising.Beware the mighty power of the women! Carla and Chelsey are armed and dangerous.Brad is really working this time. That is him behind the tree. It was about this time that I recommended putting down the crobar that was doing pretty much nothing and picking up the sawsall. We had two of them, after all. The boys wouldn't have to fight about who got to use it. After some deliberation they finally decided that might be a good idea. After cutting down the trees that were holding the building up they cut the small amount of wood on the sides of the walls that wasn't rotted away and pulled with all their might.Darrell working with the sawsall on the back of the building. This side was much more deteriorated and easier to disassemble as we waited for a friend to bring her tractor into town for some serious leverage. Finally, our friend Carol Halvorson was able to get to town with her tractor and grapple. With one grab and pull the whole front of the shed came down in a heap. This was the beginning of the end and the end of the film, as I had left my digital camera and was using the old reliable 35mm. Unfortunately for everyone involved in the day, I misloaded the new film and this was the last picture we got from the event. No one will ever get to see me or Chelsey cutting apart the remaining structure with the power saws in our own hands. It is a mere memory. The city truck that hauled it all away. Seven trips to Hendrum Lagoon burn pile.

I don't even have an after picture to add here. But it is gone gone gone. Well, we think there is still some junk buried in the middle of it all but it looks nice and clean on the surface at this time. The space is still lined by trees and it is hard to imagine a whole shed sat in that small area just a few weeks ago. If you are interested in seeing the after view feel free to drive by any time. Now to get that trailer rolling on down the road. I can only dream of the view then.

Cold weather

Em got a new winter hat and mittens.Dang, she's cute.

Fabulous Fall

Will and I were on our way to get the mail this morning in winter coats, hats, mittens and snow boots (wishful thinking on the short one's part) when he noticed the ginormous piles of leaves in our neighbor's yard. I was able to dissuade him from jumping in their piles with promises of huge piles of our own so after borrowing a couple of rakes from the Torgersons we had at those leaves like nobody's business.Amazing how much fun you can have with out motors and batteries and lights and video. We plan to go out and introduce Em to fall some time this weekend if it ever gets above 30 degrees.
